On July 14, 2006, at 7 pm, a new exhibition opened at the Custom House Maritime Museum as part of a city-wide celebration of the 125th anniversary of New London's daily newspaper: "Maritime History in the Pages of The Day."

The new exhibition features the following maritime stories
as reported in past issues of The Day:

  • 1903: launching of the Minnesota, the largest ship in
the world at that time;
  • 1916: visit of the Deutschland;
  • 1938: Hurricane Extra;
  • 1938: Hurricane photo section;
  • 1941: arrival in Mystic of the Charles W. Morgan;
  • 1954: launching of the Nautilus;
  • 1963: loss of the Thresher;
  • 2000: Opsail
